Don’t Know What to Say When You Pray? Let Me Help

Updated: Nov 28, 2024

I’ve been there, sitting in silence, staring at the ceiling, feeling like I had no idea what to say to God. It left me frustrated, even unworthy, like I wasn’t “spiritual enough.” But here’s what I’ve learnt: prayer isn’t about having the perfect words. It’s about showing up, being real, and letting God meet you exactly where you are.

One verse that completely changed my perspective is Romans 8:26: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Isn’t that beautiful? Even when we’re at a loss for words, God understands our hearts.

Starting Small : When I didn’t know what to say, I started small. Sometimes it was just, “Thank you, Lord,” or “Help me today.”  These simple prayers opened the door to deeper conversations with God over time.

One method that helped me find focus was the ACTS method:

  • Adoration: Start by praising God for who He is—His goodness, faithfulness, and love.

  • Confession: Admit your struggles or mistakes. It’s freeing to be honest with God.

  • Thanksgiving: Take a moment to thank Him for the blessings in your life, big and small.

  • Supplication: Bring your requests to Him—your needs, dreams, and even the things you’re worried about.

This framework gave me structure, but it’s flexible. Don’t stress about “getting it right.” Adjust it to fit your style and needs.

Leaning on Scripture : Another game-changer was praying through Scripture. When words fail, the Bible provides the perfect language. The Psalms, in particular, are packed with heartfelt prayers that you can personalize.

Here are a few of my go-to verses:

From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint.” (Psalm 61:2) This reminds me to cry out to God, even when I feel distant or weary.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” (Psalm 139:23) This verse helps me invite God into my inner struggles.

Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) When I’m overwhelmed, this verse calms me and reminds me of God’s sovereignty.

Be Honest and Authentic: One of the most liberating things I realized is that God doesn’t want a performance. He wants a relationship. So, be honest. If you’re upset, tell Him. If you’re confused, ask for clarity. If you’re thankful, pour out your gratitude.

Here’s the thing, God already knows what’s on your heart. Prayer is less about informing Him and more about inviting Him into your circumstances.

Practical Tips for Breaking the Silence

1. Journal Your Prayers: Write out your thoughts as if you’re writing a letter to God. Sometimes, seeing your words on paper makes them flow more naturally.

2. Use Music: Worship songs are like prayers set to music. Sing along or let the lyrics inspire your words.

3. Pray Aloud: If your mind wanders, try speaking your prayers out loud. It helps keep your focus.

4. Set a Timer: Start with just two minutes. Sometimes, having a defined time makes it less intimidating.

If you’re feeling unsure about what to say, don’t overthink it, just start talking. God isn’t looking for eloquence or perfection. He’s looking for an open heart.

What about you? Have you found ways to break through the silence in prayer?
